A key aspect of the study abroad experience in Ireland is the student's achievements. To truly value this progress, these achievements must be validated once they return to Spain.

At My Language Quest, we take care of the entire process for you, ensuring your year in Ireland is legally recognized. However, it is still helpful to understand how the process works and what requirements or conditions may apply.

Requirements to Validate an Irish School Year in Spain by Academic Grade

From 4th of ESO onwards, the school year validation process takes place once the courses are completed and the student has returned to Spain.

The requirements to obtain the school year validation are as follows:

  • Students completing the 1st Year of the Senior Cycle (equivalent to 4th of ESO in Spain): must take and pass at least five subjects.
  • Students completing the 2nd Year of the Senior Cycle (equivalent to 1st of Bachillerato in Spain): must take and pass at least five subjects.
  • Students completing the 3rd Year of the Senior Cycle (equivalent to 2nd of Bachillerato in Spain): must take at least six subjects. Of these, two must be at Higher Level with grades of A, B, or C, while the remaining subjects can be chosen from either Higher Level or Ordinary Level with grades of A, B, C, or D. Taking the Leaving Certificate exam at the end of the school year is mandatory.

Important: Transition Year (4th of ESO) and the 5th and 6th-year courses of the Senior Cycle (1st and 2nd of Bachillerato) can only be validated in Spain if they have been fully completed in Ireland. It is not possible to validate just a single term or semester of the Senior Cycle.

Please note that studies prior to 4th of ESO in Ireland are automatically recognized, so no bureaucratic procedures are required in this regard. The entire process involves a series of file transfers and authorizations to carry them out, for which MLQ is fully authorized, so the family does not have to worry about anything.

Standard Processing Times

The procedures begin once the Irish school issues the original final grades, typically at the end of June. At that point, all documentation is submitted to the MECD (Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport), which assigns a registration number to the file. With this registration number, the student can enroll for the next school year in Spain without waiting for the official credential, which usually arrives between December and March.

Finally: Is the school year in Ireland fully recognized in Spain?

That is correct; the student will not lose any time or effort in academic terms. They will return to Spain with their school year fully accredited and with a unique experience in personal and academic growth. This is one of the aspects that raises the most doubts among families, but it is also the one where peace of mind is most quickly restored.
