How Allocation Works in the Choice Exchange Program in Ireland

Pared escrita con "Yo amo a Dublin"

When a Spanish family starts looking into a school year in Ireland, one of the first questions that comes up is: "Will I be able to choose my child's school, or will they just assign one to them?" It is a very understandable question, because the school is a fundamental part of the student's daily life and will be almost a second home away from home.

The answer depends on the program you choose. And in the case of the Choice Program, the short answer is: yes, you get to choose. The long answer (and the one that really matters) is how that process is organized so that your choice is effective.

Below, we will take a look at the process we carry out at My Language Quest for this crucial part of the experience.

The vast majority

The data is clear: in the vast majority of cases, the student is enrolled in their top-choice school. It is not a school that is "similar" to the one requested, nor a second choice disguised as the first. This placement is no coincidence; it is the result of a structured, multi-step process that reduces uncertainty from the very beginning.

Step 1: An in-depth interview, not a generic questionnaire

It all starts with a real conversation with the family, not a standard form. Key questions are explored, such as:

  • Do you prefer a vibrant city or a quieter environment?
  • Are you looking for a school with a specific sports, artistic, or academic tradition?
  • Co-educational or single-sex?
  • What values are important to your family?
  • What kind of school environment do you envision for your child?

This interview is what makes the difference compared to an automatic assignment: it is not about squeezing the student into an available spot, but rather first understanding what kind of experience the family is looking for.

Step 2: A personalized proposal tailored to the student's profile

With that information, a customized proposal is created featuring schools that meet three conditions at once:

  • They match the preferences shared during the interview.
  • They have available spots.
  • They align with the student's academic profile.

Working with a network of over 70 carefully selected schools across Ireland is what makes this proposal realistic, rather than a closed catalog with two or three repeated options for everyone.

Step 3: The family decides, with complete information

Before making a choice, the family receives a detailed factsheet for each proposed school: a description of the school, location and environment, educational approach and values, facilities, and available activities. With this information, up to 3 schools are selected in order of preference.

Step 4: Enrollment management, always prioritizing the first choice

This is where the final outcome is determined. Enrollment is managed by actively prioritizing the family's first choice.
It is the behind-the-scenes work (the direct relationship with each school, actual knowledge of their spots and operations) that makes it possible to successfully match families with their ideal school.

Why this matters more than it seems

The difference between the No Choice Program and the Choice Program isn't just about price (€14,450 compared to €16,950 for the full year). It is a difference in options: some families prefer to leave the decision in expert hands, while others need to have the final say on where their child will spend an entire year.

For the latter, knowing that there is a genuine process behind the word "choice", rather than just the theoretical possibility of requesting a school, is what makes all the difference between choosing with confidence and choosing with doubt.

If your priority is to have an impact on the decision, without giving up the security of working with well-known and verified schools, the Choice Program is designed exactly for that.
