What is the ideal age, and what are the requirements?

Most international students travel to the United States between the ages of 15 and 18, which corresponds to 10th to 12th grade in the American system (the equivalent of 4th of ESO, and 1st and 2nd of Bachillerato in Spain).

To access the classic exchange program (J1 visa), the US Government and agencies require strict compliance with several requirements:

• English level: An intermediate foundation is required (minimum B1), which must be officially certified through the ELTiS exam with a minimum score of 690 points. A native level is not necessary, as immersion and support classes help students improve quickly.
• Academic record: Good school performance over the last three years, with an approximate minimum GPA of 6 out of 10.
• Health and attitude: Being in good general health and, above all, demonstrating emotional maturity, flexibility, and a genuine interest in integrating into a new culture.

Can I choose the destination or the host family?

In the Classic J1 program, the answer is no. Placements are made based on availability anywhere across the United States through volunteer host families who receive no financial compensation. However, students can indicate basic preferences, such as pet allergies or special diets, which we do our best to accommodate.

Is it difficult to pass, and how does the credit transfer process work?

The American education system differs significantly from the European one. It focuses more on continuous assessment, class participation, hands-on projects, and presentations. With daily effort and consistency, the vast majority of students pass without any issues.

Regarding the validation in Spain of school years such as 4th of ESO or Bachillerato, it is a completely viable process.
