It is a one-year program offered to students aged 15 to 16 in Ireland. Following the Junior Cycle of secondary school and before the Leaving Cert exams, TY allows students to explore new areas, develop skills, and mature without the immediate pressure of exams.

Advantages of Transition Year for international students

  • Personal and social development: TY helps students gain independence and maturity. It is perfect for international students looking to adapt to Irish culture and improve their English.
  • Exploring new areas: TY allows students to try various subjects and extracurricular activities. This helps them discover interests and skills that can influence their future academic and career decisions.
  • Preparation for the Leaving Cert: Even though it doesn't focus on exams, TY prepares students for the Leaving Cert by improving their organizational and study skills.
  • Improved English language proficiency: International students have a great opportunity to perfect their English, as they are immersed in an English-speaking environment both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Work experience and volunteering opportunities: TY includes practical activities such as volunteering and work experience, which provide valuable experience and can help students build a professional network.
  • Preparation for adult life: Beyond academics, Transition Year teaches essential life skills such as financial management, decision-making, and teamwork, preparing students for their future.
