Can I start with a term and extend later? The honest answer
La respuesta corta es sí, en general es posible, pero con condiciones muy distintas según el destino y circunstancias. A continuación vamos a ver

The short answer is yes, it is generally possible, but with very different conditions depending on the destination and circumstances. Below, we will look at which of these factors influence whether an extension is a possibility and how the process works once the decision to extend is made.
This is the most flexible option for an extension.
Yes, it is possible to enroll for a term and later extend to a full year. Keep in mind that individual terms cannot be officially validated in Spain, and usually an internal arrangement is made with the Spanish school so the student can reintegrate into the educational system upon return. If the extension is for a full year, the student will have to validate the entire academic year when returning to Spain.
Here the situation is more varied, mostly due to visa regulations.
The J-1 program is an official cultural exchange controlled by the US Government, and it can only be experienced once in a lifetime. The US government designed it exclusively as a full-year experience, although we can assess semester options.
With an F-1 visa, you can choose how long you want to study in the United States: from a full year (10 months), a semester (5 months), or a term.
The F-1 program offers greater flexibility and the ability to choose the destination, school, and duration. It is open to students aged 12 to 19, from 2nd year of ESO to 2nd year of Bachillerato.
The real restriction lies in the way visas are granted: the school defines the program's duration and, based on that, the government issues the visa for that specific length of time. This does not make extending a term impossible, but it does involve more bureaucratic complexity than, for example, extending in Ireland.
Yes, it is possible to start with a term and extend to a full year, but there is an important detail that conditions everything: for stays of less than six months, a Study Permit is not required and the student can enter as a visitor, whereas for stays longer than six months, obtaining it is mandatory. This means that if the intention is to be able to extend, the student must apply for the Study Permit before leaving Spain.
Anyone traveling only on a visitor permit to do a term closes that door from the very beginning. Otherwise, extending in Canada is flexible: Canada does not have a centralized system like the American J-1 visa, so availability depends on the specific school district or school chosen.
Regarding validation, the same criteria as in Ireland apply: the term cannot be officially validated in Spain, but if it is extended to a full year, it will be necessary to start the validation process upon return.
The school year is divided into three terms: the first runs from late August or early September until December, the second from January until Easter, and the third from April until late May or early June.
Students can choose to do a single term by selecting one of two options: Term 1 (late August to late December) or Term 2 (early January to early April). If they wish to extend to the full year, this is only feasible starting from Term 1—meaning, by beginning in September.
Key Point: If you start in January (Term 2), there is no real possibility of extending to a full year, as the academic year is already well underway.
Once the student and their family decide to extend the program duration, a series of steps take place:
1. Contact the agency: During the course of the term (the sooner, the better) to communicate the intention to extend.
2. Confirmation from the host school: The availability to extend depends on each individual center and is analyzed on a case-by-case basis.
3. Confirmation from the host family: If the student is staying with a host family, it is also necessary for them to be able to continue hosting the student for the remainder of the academic year.
4. Manage the situation with the Spanish school: This is a matter that the student and their parents must discuss beforehand with the Spanish school, to understand how the term completed in Ireland will be assessed and whether they will need to sit any exams upon their return.
5. Payment of the difference: To extend, the difference between the cost of the term already paid and the cost of the full year must be settled.
At My Language Quest, we support families throughout the entire process, ensuring that the extension does not become an obstacle.
