Linear vs. Semester System (Blocks) in Canada: How is the School Year Organized?

The most common thing for Spanish families planning an exchange trip for their children in Canada is to focus on choosing the destination, accommodation, or language level. There is nothing wrong with this; however, there is a crucial factor that can largely define your child's day-to-day life in the chosen destination and often goes unnoticed: the choice between the linear vs. semester (Blocks) system.

In Spain, students are used to taking between 9 and 11 subjects simultaneously from September to June. In contrast, things work differently in Canadian high schools: depending on the model implemented in their high school program, the routine, study method, and evaluation process change radically.

Below, we analyze both models in depth so you can decide which one best suits your child's learning profile.

What is the Block or Semester System?

The semester system (known in many provinces as the Semester or Block System) divides the school year into two independent and distinct periods:

• First semester: from September to the end of January.
• Second semester: from February to the end of June.

Under this model, the student takes only 4 subjects per semester (a total of 8 subjects per year). Classes are daily and longer (usually lasting between 75 and 90 minutes), which allows for a deep dive into the material every day. Final exams are held in January, and the grades for those first 4 subjects are finalized. When February begins, the student starts fresh with 4 completely new subjects.

Advantages of the semester system:

• Lower mental load: managing only 4 subjects at a time significantly reduces stress and makes daily organization easier.
• Intensive immersion: Having classes in the same subjects every day allows for much faster progress with both the language and the technical content of the course.
• A clean slate: If the first semester has been academically tough, the second offers the opportunity to start with a completely fresh mindset and brand-new subjects.

What is the Linear System?

The linear system (Linear System) is the most similar to the traditional Spanish model. In this case, the student takes all 8 subjects simultaneously throughout the entire school year, from September to June.

Classes typically alternate using an 'A Day' and 'B Day' system, and exams and assessments are distributed across three terms. Final grades are not finalized until June.

Advantages of the linear system:

• Continuity in learning: By studying the subjects over ten months, the student assimilates concepts more progressively and has more time to mature their knowledge.
• Greater daily variety: The school schedule is more dynamic and varied, as the same subjects are not repeated every day.
• Room for recovery: If the student starts the year struggling with a subject, they have many months ahead to work on it and pull up their grade before June.

Semester or Linear System in Canadian High Schools: Which One to Choose?

The reality is that one system is not better than the other; the challenge simply lies in finding the one that best suits the student's personality.

• Choose the semester system if your child gets overwhelmed easily when balancing many exams at once, prefers to focus all their attention on a few subjects to perform at their best, or has a knack for intensive learning.
