However, it does not permit formal long-term residency or easy extension of your stay from within the country.
• Study Permit: It is mandatory for full-year programs or semesters that exceed the 6-month academic limit. This federal-level process requires submitting a complete online application to the IRCC, an in-person biometrics appointment (fingerprints and photo) at an authorized center in Spain, and active proof of financial sufficiency (approximately €17,000 for annual living costs). Processing times can take between 4 and 12 weeks.

Safety Note: Attempting to enter with an eTA for a single term and then applying for a Study Permit from within Canada to stay for the whole year is a critical mistake that usually complicates the student's legal status.

The Quebec Exception: The "Double Visa" and Its Extra Cost

The province of Quebec holds a high level of autonomy regarding education and immigration, which introduces a mandatory administrative screening prior to the federal visa: the CAQ (Certificat d’acceptation du Québec).

If the chosen destination for the academic year is Quebec, families must process this provincial permit before applying for the federal Study Permit. The order is strict: the Canadian immigration platform will reject any Study Permit application if the approved CAQ or its official proof of submission is not attached.
