When should I apply if I want to do an exchange year in the USA?

Spending an academic year in the United States is one of the most sought-after school exchanges for Spanish Middle and High School students. Learning English in a fully immersive environment, living with an American host family, and being part of a High School are life-changing experiences for young people.
But before packing your bags, there is one question every family must answer well in advance: when should you apply?
At My Language Quest, we recommend starting your planning about a year before the departure date. While it may seem like a long time, the reason is simple: spots are limited and the administrative process is lengthy. Applying early allows you to access better rates and a wider range of destination and host family options.
Applications for school exchange programs starting in August or September are usually accepted until March. For terms starting in January, the deadline is extended until September.
In the United States, the school year begins in late August or early September. Therefore, if a student wants to join at the start of the term, they should have their situation (documentation, housing, and visa) sorted out several months before those dates.
Deadlines should be viewed as windows of opportunity rather than rigid cutoff dates, as high school and family placement, document management, and visa processing take time, and spots may close once availability runs out.
For instance, the visa application process, whether for a J-1 or F-1 visa, has its own timeline and cannot be rushed. This means planning must be adjusted to these deadlines, leaving room for unexpected delays.
Once the decision to participate in a school exchange program in the US has been made, the process typically follows these stages:
These steps also have their own timelines that must be considered during planning, not only because of how long they naturally take, but also due to the possibility of unexpected delays.
There are two types of visas for these programs, and each has its own specific requirements. The J-1 visa is for official cultural exchange programs, while the F-1 visa allows students to enroll directly in a US educational institution as full-time international students.
Processing either visa takes weeks, so it cannot be left until the last minute. It is always wise to anticipate any delays, which is why MLQ guides families throughout the entire visa process to make it as smooth and predictable as possible.
Ultimately, if you or your child are thinking about spending a school year in the US, the clearest answer is: the sooner, the better.
