What is the ideal age to study at an American High School?
Most students carry out their stay between the ages of 15 and 18, which corresponds to 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in the US (from 4º de ESO to 2º de Bachillerato). Beyond age, the fundamental factor is that the student has the necessary maturity to immerse themselves in a 100% English-speaking environment and the open-mindedness to adapt to a new culture.
What kind of subjects can I take?
The variety is incredible! In addition to core subjects like Mathematics, Science, and History, you can choose fascinating electives that are not usually available in Spain: from Psychology, Business, and Robotics to Theater, Graphic Design, or Photography. Many schools also offer specialized tracks in STEM, Performing Arts, or the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB).
Is it possible to obtain an American High School Diploma?
Yes, if the student completes at least two full years and meets the credit requirements, they can graduate and obtain the High School Diploma, which provides access to universities in the US and other countries.
What is the difference between a public school and a private school?
Public schools offer large facilities, a huge variety of sports, and are the foundation of the J1 program. On the other hand, private schools (available through the F1 program) usually offer smaller class sizes, more personalized attention, and, in many cases, the option of on-campus housing (Boarding Schools). The choice depends on whether you are looking for a classic exchange immersion or a tailored academic and geographical approach.
What are extracurricular activities like?
They are the heart of school life. You will be able to join sports teams (American football, basketball, track and field) or clubs for debate, theater, robotics, and journalism. Participating in these activities is the best way to integrate and discover new talents while becoming fully immersed in the country's culture.
Will my son/daughter receive official grades?
Yes. Upon completion, the school issues an official grade report (transcript). At My Language Quest, we take care of its legalization to process the validation in Spain. Remember that only full academic years (from 10th to 12th grade / 4º de ESO to 2º de Bachillerato) require official validation; if you complete a term or semester, you re-enroll directly at your school in Spain without extra paperwork.
What happens if the student's English is not perfect?
The ideal condition is to have an intermediate foundation (equivalent to a B1) and, above all, an open attitude. Many High Schools offer ESL (English as a Second Language) programs—support classes specifically designed to help international students adapt quickly.
Can my family visit me during my school year in the USA?
Yes, let's look at what each program offers: In the Classic J1 program, parents and family members planning to visit students participating for the full academic year or the second semester should not schedule their visit before April 15th. These visits must be coordinated in advance with the student's host family and have their approval. In F1 programs, the family can visit the student once the program has ended, always with prior agreement and acceptance by the American sponsor. Additionally, the F1 program does allow the student to return to Spain during Christmas break or any other holiday period. It is one of the advantages of this program!
