Choose your High School Experience

The United States is currently one of the most popular destinations for a school year abroad. The country's geographical and cultural diversity, combined with its distinctive lifestyle, means it always holds a prominent place in the considerations of Spanish families.

One of the main reasons for its great popularity is the variety of its programs, which leads to the question that every family asks themselves sooner or later: ¿el programa J1 o el programa F1?

Next, we'll break down this topic to see what each program entails, what it offers, and help you find the ideal one for you.

The J1 Program: The Authentic Cultural Exchange Experience

The J1 Program is a cultural exchange initiative sponsored and regulated directly by the United States Government. Its primary objective is to foster international understanding through complete and traditional immersion.

In the Classic J1 program, the student is hosted by a 100% volunteer host family and attends a public school. In this format, it is not possible to choose the destination school, city, or state, although there are location supplement options (for example, East/West region, warm states, metropolitan areas, or specific programs such as J1 California VIP).

It is aimed at students aged 15 to 18 with an upper-intermediate level of English (minimum B1) and a good academic record (minimum average grade of 6/10). It is a highly demanding option where student maturity and adaptability are paramount.

With government funding and volunteer host families, it is significantly more affordable. However, it imposes strict regulations: traveling back to Spain during the school year (including Christmas and Easter) is not permitted, family visits are only allowed after April 15th, and the visa can only be issued once in a lifetime, with a maximum duration of one academic year.

The F1 Program: Customization, Flexibility, and Continuity

The F1 program is managed as an international student stay at private schools or public high schools. It stands out for offering complete control over the variables of the experience.

Through its various formats, families are free to choose the specific school, geographic region, or desired academic and athletic focus (STEM, elite sports, etc.). Accommodation is provided with paid host families or boarding schools.

The F1 visa allows students to travel to their home country during school holidays and receive family visits at any time of the year. Additionally, it allows participation starting at age 12 and offers the possibility of extending the stay for several consecutive years in the U.S. to complete high school and move on to university.

Since it covers the academic costs of the institutions and host family compensation, its fees are higher and depend directly on the choice of school and the selected format.
